ALONE, TOGETHER

The makers of Yksin, yhdessä see the film as a political one. It is a film about our time and the isolation manifest in it. The action takes place in a Helsinki block of flats, focusing on a few flats. Small everyday events gain significance as the film progresses and they form a poetic image of the lives of the main characters and their joys and sorrows. But the walls are ever present and the people behind them cannot be ignored. Janina Kokkonen and Annika Grof wrote the script for the film in the international Sources 2 script development workshop funded by the EU. The film is directed by Annika Grof and produced by Janina Kokkonen and it is their final thesis work for the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The cinematography is by Hannu-Pekka Vitikainen and the sound design by Panu Riikonen. Original music for the film is composed by Ville Riippa.
Biography
Annika Grof graduates with an M.A. in directing from the Department of Documentary Filmmaking of the School of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki in spring 2007. She has written and directed four films during her studies, of which Yksin, yhdessä is her final thesis work. In her films, she has explored her relationship with motherhood (Lapsuuden loppu, 2002) and with her father (Rekkamies, isäni, 2005), as well as the diversity of scientific work (K.A. Nieminen, 1999) and today?s Finnish urban way of life (Yksin, yhdessä, 2007). Alongside her studies, she has worked in film and TV as a director and assistant director. In the future, she hopes to direct more films with a social message and work in a variety of roles in the field for which she is educated.

?NO. 10: PARADOX INTERVENTIONS ? BETWEEN PERFORMANCE AND INTERACTION?

The project ?No.10: Paradox Interventions ? between Performance and Interaction?, functions as a polyphonic, transdisciplinary, multicultural laboratory which deals with artists from working with different media. It starts from film interventions, performances and performative installations, on to interventions with painting and contemporary dance. This also includes searching for new interventions with experimental electronic music and visual arts, content art- and fashion photography.
The aim of my work is the integration of different theoretical approaches from systems theory (Niklas Luhmann) and performance (Erika Fischer-Lichte) to my own artistic work. By influencing different directions through interdependencies new emergences are created. Neither is this project dealing with a complete choreography for a dance piece nor a classical styled photo shooting. My work tries to focus on the interface where all disciplines in each single project meet, overlap and build a grey zone which has not been much defined before.

MOBILEPLANT - A POT SYSTEM

The miracle of growth on your window-sill: the seed germinates, a seed leaf rises from the soil, the seedling becomes a plant. Mobiplant is a self-watering pot for both indoor and outdoor use. Easy to attach to each other, the pots can be used to build an entire small garden on your balcony. Mobiplant allows you to grow many different plants in a small space, but it also leaves room for you to enjoy your plants. The outer shell of Mobiplant is made of Durat, a material developed in Finland. Its durability makes it an ideal material for difficult conditions and interior decoration. Durat not only looks good, it is recyclable, and thus supports sustainable development.

COLLABORATION ARTWORK SYSTEM

Collaborative Artwork System is a graphical user interface that provides a friendly, online environment for artistic communities, where members are able to share their works and strength their roles in participative and collaborative activities, independently from time and place. This work approaches concepts such as online and mobile media, virtual learning communities, graphical user interface, user studies, and needs analysis. The main characteristic of the system is that it works as a dynamic visual network where communities build their own identities. These identities are created through linking and structuring the organization of their works on the screen.

STRATEGIC USE OF DESIGN TO ENHANCE BRAND EXPERIENCE: CASE STUDY OF SONERA FINLAND

What is your expectation before going to Hesburger? Why do designers use apple computers? Why does Google make April fools jokes? Do you remember how Stockmann smells? What comes to your mind first, when thinking about Sonera?
Answers to all these questions come from previous experiences. It could be related to product, brand, advertisement or customer service. Therefore all of these experiences are designable. Customer experience is the new area where a customer has been put in the center of activities. It is a view of how customer is connected to company through different touch points. Moreover, it is about how to keep the experience consistent. Through my thesis, I have tried to analyze and give directions to enhance existing Sonera Customer Experience.

OKSA - FONT FAMILY FOR LUONTO-LIITTO

Oksa is a new font family for Luonto-Liitto. What interested me was how to design typography for young people, a non-profit organization and environmental issues; how, for example, the non-commerciality could or even should be visible in the organization?s communication. Oksa is playful and unofficial; cheery and hand-made in spirit; springy and angular. It is meant for use in ads, announcements and magazines. Although designed for print in small sizes, I wanted it to be as versatile as possible. It looks interesting enough in headline use thanks to its small details. Many of its design solutions are helpful in magazine usage. The line contrast of the letters is small; thus even the narrow parts are visible in small size or printed white-on-dark. The ascenders and descenders are short; therefore more lines can fit onto a page. The italic is almost upright, but is distinguishable from the roman because it is narrower and wilder; being upright it works alone as well. The bold is bold enough to stand out for sure.
Biography
Eero Astala studied graphic design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and graduated with an M.A. in 2007. In 2002, the type workshop organised by the Underware group inspired his interest in typography. Fonts designed by him have been displayed at the Helsinki University Library and the Souvenir! exhibition at the Design Museum. He currently works freelance and part-time as a graphic designer for the Luonto-Liitto nature conservation society. He is inspired by films, drawing and his dachshund Armi.

BATHING / FINNISH SAUNA

Communication through senses has been the basic idea of design concepts in my works at UIAH and I have continued this concept in my final work.
This project started from the research of international bathing history with personal bathing experiences. As a result of the research, I categorized the most important mental significances in bathing to ?Purification? and ?Relaxation?. Based on these points of view, I started to research Finnish sauna culture and proposed two products to present my design concept, ?communication through the senses?.
