ether

Apart from my facination (some might say obsession) with squares, I have maintained a keen intrest in signs and since working in a sign making company back in 1993.

This is the third painting in a triptych of my current elements.

Ether in my table of elements stands for ideas and communication. Much of my day jobin the last couple of years has been spent in the creation of a countywide wireless network for Carmarthen schools.

The font used is 'transport', the open source font used for british road signs. Brown was selected as the background colour because brown road signs in Britain denote heritage or tourist attractions.

Working with radio made me think of Telsa, a theosophist. Theosophy had a lot to do with ether, (apparently).

Tesla was eventually credited with the invention of wireless but not until after an imense patent battle with Marconi. Marconi is still a household name, not so many people know who Tesla is.

1893 - Demonstrates Wireless Transmitter/Receiver Tesla demonstrates system in St. Louis TWO YEARS before Marconi's first demonstration?

1904 - Marconi awarded patent for radio The US Patent Office reverses itself, wrongly awarding Guglielmo Marconi the patent for radio! Tesla begins his fight as the inventor of radio.

1909 - Marconi wins Nobel Prize for Radio Tesla deeply resented the fact that Marconi got the prize, and not himself?

1915 - Tesla files lawsuit against Marconi This starts a patent fight that lsts for 29 years. Tesla vs. Marconi is ultimately resolved in Tesla's favor.

This is the second painting in a triptych of my current elements.

Silicon in my table of elements stands for technology. As a ceramicist and artist who happens to work as a network technician, I span both ends of the silicon spectrum.

This is the first painting in a triptych of my current elements.

Carbon in my table of elements stands for all life forms, for coal (and the inudstrial landscape and history of wales) and the unsustainability of the carbon economy.

I mostly paint squares. My re-current interest in the themes of repetition and variation as well as a facination with colour and surface.
